Rose Planting

The correct position for your new rose plant is as important as how deep the hole should be. Location is vital because sunlight and soil quality will govern whether your plant will flourish.

Will the place you choose to plant your roses get enough sunlight?  Most rose species  need at least six hours of direct, unfiltered sunlight a day.  Even shade tolerant roses need about four to six hours of direct sunlight to do well.

Roses need good nutritious soil, and will not flourish if the soil is too sandy or has too much clay.  .  To check, clump some soil in your hand.  If it holds the mold and does not crumble easily, it has too much clay. On the other hand if it crumbles too easily, it has too much sand.  Good soil should hold the mold in your hand but crumble easily.  The soil should also not be too acidic, nor contain too much limestone or chalk.

Make sure that your roses have enough space around them and between them.  Too close to large trees and they will fight for nutrients and water. When you are digging holes for your plants, if you encounter a lot of roots most likely these will cause a problem for your new plant .Remember that for some species, their roots extend way past the plant you can see, and so the correct distances can be hard to estimate by eye.  Most rose plants only like to be near other roses or other non-invasive plants.

Now that you have the perfect location for your rose plant, you can think about the basics such as how deep the hole should be.

Make sure that the hole is slightly larger than the size of the current pot or root system of the plant.  The depth of the hole depends on your climate.  In colder areas, plant the roses slightly deeper.  It is a good idea to talk to rose growers in your area to check what is appropriate. Your plant will benefit from loosening the soil at the bottom of the hole and from a little compost plus a sprinkle of bone meal. This is a source of Phosphorus and is slow acting and encourages healthy root growth.  Spread out the roots slightly after you place the plant into the hole.  Refill the hole and make sure that the soil settles around the roots.  Water the roots before you cover them with the last couple of inches of soil.  And finally place the last of the soil back into the hole and press the soil firmly round the stem to stabilize it.You can water the plant again at this point..
